My name is Kate and I am a doctoral student studying conservation biology and statistics. So what am I doing writing a vegan baking blog?
As a graduate student, I have found that it is important to have passions outside your academic field. One of my passions is baking. I love spending the whole day in the kitchen mixing batters, kneading dough, filling my apartment with delicious scents, and of course, taste-testing all the way! My mom is a talented bread baker and she involved me in baking from a young age. We still love to bake together, even though we live over one thousand miles apart — we get on Skype and spend a couple of hours making the same recipe in our separate kitchen, chatting the whole time about our latest cooking and baking adventures.
I became a vegetarian at the age of 16, when I learned about the environmental impact of eating meat. When the convenient food options were not always vegetarian, I became more serious about learning how to cook and bake, experimenting with cuisines and flavors I had not experienced before. A reality check about my long-term health convinced me to try going vegan in my mid-twenties, and two years later, my veganism is still going strong.
On this blog, I am excited to share with you some of the lessons I have learned about vegan baking, as well as original recipes that can help bring vegan baking into your everyday life. I hope you have as much fun with it as I do!
